About Our Blog

Our Writing-Advice Approach

I learned how to write in academia the traditional way. Given a set of data, I wrote my manuscript, and my co-authors edited and critiqued. It took me years to get any good as a writer, because co-author teams focused mainly on the content—not on the mechanics of writing:

When used right, writing techniques are invisible.

After starting sayedit.com and working with EFL authors for a few years, I realized the best way to understand a writing technique is by using it to rewrite excerpts of famous, often cited articles. Because the significance of famous articles is established, any improvement on rewriting immediately stands out. The essence of this blog stems from this approach.

Voices, Tenses & Paragraphs does the rewriting for you. Our main approach produces excerpt makeovers of often-cited academic articles. These makeovers are designed to show how features of the English language can structure information to tell a story.

After reading our blog, if you find yourself noticing someone’s verb-tenses at a poster session; or getting annoyed at the author of an anticipated article for not using paragraphs; or rereading one of our posts before writing your own introduction—look no further! Our approach is working for you. Be sure to subscribe and let us know!
